MARY PLAIN and her various Ocean-class sisters were designed immediately after the Second World War for construction by shipwrights who had recently built dozens of wooden fighting vessels for the Royal Navy, especially the 112-foot, 20 knot Fairmile B submarine chasers. Using access to rare supplies of first class timber, the Truman design offered a deep and safe cockpit, a wide saloon, high freeboard and 1,8m headroom.

First edition cover 1930
The Ocean 30 cutter, launched at Wallasea Island in 1948, was named after a fictional bear, much-loved by young listeners to Uncle Mac [Derek McCulloch] broadcasting on BBC Children's Hour in the 1930s. Mary Plain, an orphan bear at the Bern Zoo in Switzerland, made her first appearance in the 1930 novel Mostly Mary the first of 15 Mary Plain stories published by the Welsh author Gwynedd Rae.

In 2005 a new owner for MARY PLAIN, only her third owner in 57 years, undertook a very thorough 3-year refit, achieving a restoration and a complete reconstruction of the coachroof.

New keel bolts were fitted. Straight-cut, flat topped oak floors were fitted between every third timber using new throat bolts. The owner installed a new Yanmar 4-cylinder 4JH4AE engine with a completely new drive train and shaft sealing.

The new painted marine ply deck, sheathed in epoxy/glass, included a varnished mahogany toe rail, new hatches. bronze mushroom vents and new grab rails.

Winter storage on the hard at Hafan Pwllheli has heavily weathered the white-painted pitch-pine planking and blue foredeck but the benefits of the deep and expensive refit between 2005 and 2008 remain. Her owner's illness dictates a change of ownership. We can offer prospective buyers an immediate transport quotation to any location.
